India is about to launch an Amazon Prime Video service that it hopes will compete with Apple’s $99 Apple TV streaming box.
The country’s finance ministry said Monday that the service, to be launched next month, will compete directly with iTunes and Amazon Prime as well as the likes of Amazon Prime Instant Video, YouTube and Netflix.
India’s ecommerce industry is the world’s largest with a $4 trillion annual market worth about $60 billion, according to research firm eMarketer.
The government, however, has not yet announced the launch date or price tag.
It has already signed deals with Amazon and eBay to bring online shopping services to India, as well.
India is also considering launching a digital shopping mall in the city of Ahmedabad.
